“Your body is smarter than you, smarter than me, and smarter than any doctor.” – Steven Baker D.C
I believe that every human life is an absolute miracle. We all started out as 2 cells, becoming one, and evolving into trillions. We did this all on our own, through our own life force, our innate (inborn) intelligence. Every pregnancy is different, but the development is the same. We even have apps out there to tell us what our baby is developing from week to week. Do you want to know if your baby is the size of an avocado? There’s an app for that! It’s clockwork. The best part? Women don’t even have to try to think about it. IT JUST HAPPENS! Baby and mom are working together each utilizing their innate intelligence, to bring a living soul into the universe. If that doesn’t awe you, then I have my work cut out for me.
If innate intelligence were to have a home, it would be in your brain. Your brain is the central control room of the nervous system. I like to imagine I have a miniature version of myself in my brain, controlling what the big bodily self is doing at all times. Every sensation, breath, heartbeat, chemical reaction, muscle movement, etc. is being regulated by miniature me. Every input into the brain is responded to by Mini Me in nano seconds. Mini Me has trillions of arms spinning trillions of plates all at once. Mini Me is quite the over achiever. Mini Me is perfect, and so is Mini You.
What happens then, if Mini You is compromised? A plate drops, illness occurs. Mini You has not one, not two, but three evil villains: thoughts, traumas, and toxins. When negative actions are repetitively inflicted upon your innate intelligence, Mini You is forced to prioritize chaos.
Do we clear the colon, we have a lot of gas in here? No time! Build fat to block off toxins! I thought we wanted to lose fat? We cant think about that right now! The liver and kidneys are in overdrive! — Mini Me also talks to herself —
Chaos.
The problem with thoughts, traumas, and toxins is that they have recently rooted into our society and marketed themselves as “normal.”
Thoughts: emotional stress. Have you ever heard of someone having a visceral response to an emotional situation? They may even use the phrase “I was worried sick.” Or when going through a breakup, you may have experienced “heartache.” This is known as psychosomatic pain (mental stress presented as physical pain). If the body is chronically stressed out, it will continuously produced hormones for stress induced situations including: adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine.
These hormones are great to fight off a bear, and will subside once the threat has been eliminated. The problem with our society is that the bear stays. We are constantly bombarded with emails, texts, social media alerts, and that’s just technology stress! Nevermind, work, personal, family, and friendship stresses! When these hormones are not turned off they will lead to symptoms of: anxiety, headaches, irritability, digestion issues, sleep disturbances, and weight gain.
Traumas: repetitive movements or traumatic events. When I hear the word trauma, my mind automatically goes to a car accident. Windows crashing, heads whipping forward and back, like on the commercials for car insurance. I’ve been lucky to have never been in this type of accident, but I know some patients who have. Traumas don’t have to be extreme. Harvard did a study a few years back where they found that a car accident going as slow as 7 mph was enough to throw a bone out of place. That my friends is what people define as a fender bender. BUT IT CAN THROW BONE OUT OF PLACE!!
If you are like me and weren’t gifted with grace, you’ve fallen hundreds of time, hit your head off of countless objects, and ran into many of night stands. We can’t remember, but imagine how many times you’ve fallen straight on your butt learning to walk. I often think about the millions of kids out there that have never had their spines checked! They often end up in my office 30 years later in chronic pain! These little traumas can add up over time, and sneak up on us when we least expect.
Repetitive motion is another new flaw of society. Most people envision a factory line worker, repetitively rotating in one direction performing one major job for 8 hours straight. Repetitive motion can be more simple than that. Imagine sitting at a desk 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for decades. It’s easy to imagine, because most of you live that life! That’s not even including the commute time, eating meals, and watching television, all siting down.
My chiropractor growing up would refer to this as “Death By 90 Degrees.” When we are sitting we are creating a 90 degree plane in almost every major joint in our lower body. Our bodies were not made for a sedentary lifestyle, we were made to move! You’ve heard of muscle memory before i’m sure, and it’s often referred to movements for athletes. Muscles will adapt to what they are most frequently doing, if sitting is your activity for most of your life, your body will adapt and change to that position. However, our joints were’t designed for this, which causes musculo-skeletal distress.
Quick advice, get a standing desk most companies will pay for them now, and a doctor’s excuse is a huge help! I’ve written a few now. Standing desks are much better for changing positions in your day which reduces muscle restriction, and will increase your productivity.
Toxins: Drugs, chemicals, food choices. Toxins aren’t always labeled with Mr. Green stickers. The biggest offenders are those that we see on prime time television, and use words like “BBQ tenders,” or, “100% white meat.” Have you ever noticed they actually never disclose the type of meat they are advertising?! Preservatives, chemical dyes, sugars, etc. bombard our labels, and are destroying our bodies defensive systems.
Were you even aware that we are only 1 out 2 countries worldwide that allows pharmaceutical companies to advertise? That means that if you go to any other country (besides New Zealand), you will never see a drug commercial, magazine ad, or billboard. My Fiancé and I like to play a fun game called Side Effects. We unconsciously watch drug commercials to see if we pay attention to the list of side effects. You’ll notice that during this disclosure, the little boy finally hits the baseball off the tee! The dress fits perfectly in the shop! The sunshine comes out and you lock your bladder in the closet! Its called misdirection, and big pharma is very good at it!
We have normalized each and every one of these villains. It’s almost like when you see on the news that someone robbed a bank, and the neighbor says, “We were shocked! He was the nicest guy!”
Stress, inactivity, diet, and drug-use have become so normal that we are surprised to find out they are destroying our health. Over the next 90 days I will be battling these villains one month at a time and avenging my health from the normalcy of our society!
This month I will be taking on Toxins with Arbonne’s 30 Days to Healthy Living. Ridding my body of the toxins I’ve eaten over the last 2 decades, and retraining my eating habits. During my journey i’ll be teaching you through my blog how to adapt and resists thoughts, traumas, and toxins for a healthier you.
I guess you can now refer to me as the Chiropractic Crusader!
